Frosty's Flipped Fruitcake and The Brooklyn Holiday Experiment

Poor fruitcake. It's always the butt of jokes this time of year, and, unfortunately, for good reason: it's usually dense, booze-soaked but somehow dry in texture, and filled with frightening artificially colored candied fruits. But fruitcake doesn't have to be such a disaster. It can be good - even delicious - if it's approached with a fresh perspective.

Last week, I reinvented fruitcake for The Brooklyn Holiday Experiment and with great results - the judges awarded it third place.  Redemption for fruitcake!

Chewy Triple Ginger Cookies

It was really hot here in NYC last week (like late July hot, 90 degrees and humid) and it’s been making me crave ice cream sandwiches. There are a few places in town that serve up a mean one (check out the roundup that Serious Eats did last summer), but there’s something to be said about a homemade ice cream sandwich.

I had planned to make rhubarb-ginger frozen yogurt and serve it with fresh strawberries (the teeny tiny ones from our fruit share), but I later decided that those strawberries deserved to be eaten on their own so that they could take center stage. I suppose we could have eaten the frozen yogurt by itself, but, being who I am, I couldn’t just stop there; I would make ice cream sandwiches with it!

Tropical Dinner Part 1: Macadamia-Crusted Marinated Tofu

Last week, I went all out and made a snazzy tropical-ish dinner, complete with pre-dinner cocktail, three sides, and dessert. Every day this week I'll be posting each of the items from that menu. With the exception of the dessert, everything is really easy to make. And everything is absolutely delicious - I have to say that I was really surprised at how great everything came out!
